Two things can be said about this atrocity, which seems to be the general consensus among reviewers until they actually rate this collection. First, the idea of a “best-of” and the Dave Matthews Band is an oxymoronic concept. And second, the best thing about it is that by including two discs, if you buy two sets of this trash, you will have a complete set of coasters to rest your drinks on while you search for something more listenable, which shouldn’t be too difficult. As e-Bay would show, those who like this item should also look at “Environmental Sounds – Injured Wolves and the Sounds They Make” or “Atonal Orchestral Warmups – The Sounds of Broken Instruments”. Pass the crack pipe and enjoy.

These days with so many different acts trying to be as definitive as possible with their music, there always seems to be something missing. That also can definitely be said with greatest hit albums as well. These days, there is always something that is missing from a definitive greatest hits package, it can always make or break an arists’ complete musical career. This past year, with nearly definitive hits packages released from Huey Lewis & The News, Bryan Adams, and many others, tere are other great act with packages that need improvement. That also can be said with the Dave Matthews Band. Although they’ve had numerous great tracks that have been not just appealing, but they remain just fun and exciting to listen to. Now tht there is a greatest hits package from them, can they thrive into a definitive reflection of their great career?
The Best Of What’s Around, Volume 1, is the Dave Matthews Band’s first greatest hits album, and tries to showcase the band to what is as definitive as possible. The double album tries to work it put by showing not just live recordings, but also their considered best at studio recordings. The album includes a lot of great hits from What Would You Say?, Crash Into Me, the somber Grey Street, and the soulful Crush, as well as live recording of tracks like Everyday, and Don’t Drink The Water. Although the record tries to be definitive, the album sadly overlooks a lot of great tracks from the group such as Satellite, the soulful Where Are You Going?, I Did It, their recent track Dreamgirl, and Dave Matthews solo hit Gravedigger.
All in all I was just expecting a bit more from the Dave Matthews Band into this hits package. Although it is great for anybody who doesn’t own a Dave Matthews record, but not as much dealing for die hard fans to being as definitive as possible. That is truthfully what would I say.
This is a great set of DMB music for avid fans, or the ocassional listener.
It includes hits like the sexy Say Goodbye, to more “top 40’s” radio-played hits like where are you going.
I love Dave, and his sexy voice, the instrumentals….so if you’re new to Dave it’s a good place to start. It’s a mix of live and studio performances, so if you don’t listen to any other cd’s you’ll miss out on some other good live tracks, but live or in the studio- he’s still a magician!

All of the DMB CD’s are good. But if you want a great mix of studio and live recordings all in one compilation, this one can’t be beat.
